Christmas means a lot of family gatherings, food, drinks and parties and one place that shows evidence is the skin! All the food and late nights wreak havoc in the form of spots, texture, enlarged pores and whilst for some its inevitable (I know I will get a spot or two) we can help minimise and maybe even prevent some!

Basic skincare tips

Double cleanse– if you’re going to wear heavy makeup or SPF or anything on your face, double cleansing is key. Start by removing whatever you have on BB cream/ SPF/Foundation then going in with a creamy cleanser to remove the last bits of residue.

Masks– add hydrating masks to your routine 2-3 times a week. Its cold out, there’s central heating plus everything else will no doubt dehydrate the skin. Rehydrate, repair and soothe the skin with a nice hydrating mask

Brighten– Vitamin C is all I have to say and it’s about time you added one to your routine

Protect & Moisturise– I know its winter but you still need your SPF! You can opt for a lower SPF like 20- 30 daily and add your antioxidants to enhance your protection! A good moisturiser day and night will also help banish dry patches on the skin

Product recommendations

Texture/enlarged pores/breakouts– there are two main products I would recommend- Niacinamide and Salicylic acid from The Ordinary. I have tested these out and they work well for oily/congested skin to reduce texture and pores. Full reviews on these serums here and here.

Dry/dehydrated skin– Clinique’s dramatically different moisturiser is a best seller for a reason! If that is out of your budget, the Ordinary’s Natural Moisturising Factors is a good non oily moisturiser to try. For hydration serums, I love The Ordinary Amino Acid serumFor masks– sheet masks are a quick and easy way of adding extra hydration but I also love the Nuxe Soothing and Refreshing Fresh Mask and GlamGlow ThirstMud.

Dull skin– with a lot going on, the skin may start to look dull and lacklustre. Combat this with the addition of Vitamin C, the gold standard for brightening skin. I love The Ordinary MAP and sung many praises to it. Exfoliation is also key for revealing healthier glowing skin. I have come away from physical scrubs but if I do use them it’s very sparingly and not often. I would use the Nip Fab Glycolic Fix scrub which has AHA. I prefer chemical exfoliation using acid toners and the ones I would recommend are Pixi Glow TonicThe Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7%, and Glossier Solution

Cleansing– removing your makeup isn’t enough, you have thoroughly cleanse the skin afterwards. This will go a long way in helping you keep a texture free face! Thoroughly doesn’t mean harsh.  I have fallen in love with balm cleansers and the two I love are Nip Fab Deep Cleansing Fix and Tri Balm. If they aren’t your thing, try the Creamy cleanser from B. skincare or for a quick fix try the Olay facial in a box cleansing cloths

Summary

Double cleanse, mask, treat and moisturise your way this season to beautiful glowing skin. If it so happens a spot or two pops up before an event no stress, use salicylic acid to spot treat and Mario Badescu drying lotion to dry it out. If it doesn’t work, girl doesn’t worry, it won’t take away from your beauty!

Wishing everyone a fun-filled and safe Christmas
